[Fixed] MS Office 2016: Microsoft Setup Bootstrapper has stopped working

Man, seriously I hate this. I faced the same problem last time when upgrading MS Office 2010 to 2013. I can’t find a solution. In the end, I reformatted my machine after wasted countless of hours.. demm.

Anyways FYI, I’m running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, and installing MS Office Std 2016 32 bit.

Error popup «Microsoft Setup Bootstrapper has stopped working» while installing.

Here’s the error log I found in %temp%:

The Solution

Go to MS Office 2016 Std setup files (be it in a DVD or a folder) «MS Office 2016 Standardstandard.ww«
Copy the file ose.exe ( Note: this file must be copied from the Installer you using. You cannot copy ose.exe from MS Office Pro installer while your installation is MS Office Standard. It doesn’t work )
Go to «C:Program FilesCommon Filesmicrosoft sharedSource Engine» (You may need to create the folder «Source Engine»)
Paste the ose.exe to «Source Engine» folder
Download this reg file: ose.reg
Open the ose.reg file to apply the registry settings to your registry
Restart your computer
Run services.msc
Start the service «Office 64 Source Engine» if it is not started. ( Note: This service must be started! )
Try installing MS Office setup again

Microsoft Setup Bootstrapper has stopped working while installing Office

Microsoft has tried to enhance installation of their products by implementing latest technologies. In the old days, we have used executable files which were quite capable of installing a product with a single click. However, in Office 2013/2016, Microsoft is using Bootsrapper technology. Bootstrapper is responsible for the initialization of an application built using the Composite Application Library. You can explore more about Bootsrapper technology on MSDN.

Recently, while installing Microsoft Office, we came around the issue of installation failure due to Bootsrapper technology. We received following error:

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close this program and notify you if a solution is available.

So as you can see in the error message shown above, Windows closes the program but it never notifies anything after that to solve this problem, and you have to manually fix it using following steps:

Before you commence, please create a System Restore point before trying this solution. Since making mistakes in the manipulation of registry could result in messing up of your system.

Completely uninstall your Office installation. This is important. Having done that, now do the following and see if it helps.

1. Press Windows Key + R combination, type put regedit in the Run dialog box and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.

2. In the left pane, navigate here:

3. At this registry location, as shown in above image, right click over AppCompatFlags key and select Export. Save this key as registration file at a convenient location on your system for the backup purpose. Now right click the same key, i.e. AppCompatFlags and select Delete.

You can now close the Registry Editor and reboot the machine.

After restarting the system, you should install Microsoft Office, in Clean Boot State.
